The Wren Family

Families are the core of why we do what we do at the Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Central Florida, and we love to empower them to share their stories. The Wrens are one of those families! This is their story, in their words.

Finding Out

“In 2015 we found out we were pregnant with a little girl. The same day, the doctor told us she had what they thought was Dandy Walker Malformation—a rare brain disorder. So she had her first brain surgery and 5 weeks later she had another brain surgery, and then about 2 years later she started having some issues and the neurosurgeon said she needed another brain surgery. Before the surgery, we were kind of being told about the hospital and how it would work. And they mentioned that if we needed a place to stay, there was a Ronald McDonald House® right there on the campus.”

A Gift

“To be able to have an affordable place and within walking distance from the hospital was just such a gift. Like, going back home, knowing okay, we’re not going to have very many needs while we’re here. Even little things like finding a gift basket in our room from parents who had lost their baby. And it was just such a gift and an honor to have that blanket that they passed on to us. It was only different essentials in the basket—but those little details go a long way. Small things that people may not be aware of just how much impact they leave. But it left such a big impact on me that it’s been almost 8 years and I still remember those details. Now our girl is 8 years old and she’s thriving. She walks, she talks, she dances, she sings, all with two brain shunts in. We’re so thankful she’s doing well.”

Lasting Impact

It is our joy (pun very much intended) to serve families like the Wrens. After staying with us once in 2016 and again in 2018, they continue to be engaged with our mission of keeping families close. Last October, Joy Wren competed in our inaugural The Block’s Rising Star Competition, and this spring she volunteered her musical talents during events like Appetite For The Arches and the unveiling of the Lou Ann DeVoogd Society. We’re so thankful for how the Wrens have given back in light of their experience with us at RMHCCF.
